EFL or English as a Foreign Language used interchangeably with ESL. Even though it is often used interchangeably, there are minor change in the context.

Students learning English while living in their own country learn EFL even though they might not need English as an official Language in their country.

If we talk about teaching or learning English in a country where English is not spoken, we usually use the word “EFL”, but “ESL” is sometimes used, too.

• ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) – Used for adult learning and college students whose native language is not English. • EFOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) – Used less often than ESOL, but essentially has the same meaning.

• TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) – Used when referring to teachers of English working in countries where it is not the primary language. This can include teachers working in international schools or those hired to teach English to employees or staff of international businesses and organizations.
