“ge,” “dge” Rule: “-dge” spells the /j/ sound at the end of words with a short vowel right before the /j/ sound. Example: badge Use –ge in words with all other vowel sounds and short vowel words that have a consonant sound before the /j/ sound. Examples: cage, fringe Why do these words all end with a silent “e?” No word in the English language ends in “j.”
